I am the Managing Director of a law firm which I founded in 1969 – Brian Kahn Inc. Attorneys.

I am in the unique position of having straddled two important disciplines in the legal field, one being corporate law (mergers, acquisitions, corporate strategies involving implementation of shareholders and other business driven agreements, advising companies on strategy etc.) and the other being dispute resolution in the corporate / civil field (arbitrations and litigation).

I have arbitrated locally and internationally and been involved in both large and small commercial transactions.

I act for listed entities, large private companies, family conglomerates, entrepreneurs and individuals. I have also acted for various departments and organs of state in the Republic of South Africa as well as former heads of state in Africa.

I have also been recognised by my peers as having the sort of skills that can assist them personally when involved in hostilities involving their personal or professional lives.

During June 2025, I was appointed to the High Court of South Africa, Johannesburg Local Division as an Acting Judge.

I have over the years established firm collegial and professional relationships with colleagues throughout the world many of whom refer matters to us on behalf of their offshore clients where we have acted either alone or as co-counsel. I have travelled on behalf of clients and colleagues to the following countries over the years; Abu Dhabi, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Austria, Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Dubai, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Holland, Iceland, Ireland, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Namibia, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, the United Kingdom, USA and Zambia.

  • 1969 : Admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa on 7 September

Mr Peter van Blerk SC

Peter van Blerk SC commenced practice at the Johannesburg Bar in 1975 and took silk in 1992.

Peter conducts a wide-ranging commercial practice that includes litigation in the fields of company law, contractual disputes, property matters and insolvency law.

Peter has acted as a judge of the High Court and sat as an arbitrator. He was a member of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa and was on its commercial panel of arbitrators. Peter has played a substantial role in practical legal education. He has lectured to pupil advocates on civil trial practice and legal writing for a number of years.

Peter was also involved, in conjunction with members of the English Bar, in setting up the Johannesburg Bar Advocacy Training Programme.

He is the author of the published works Legal Drafting: Civil Proceedings, Preparation for Civil Trials and Precedents for Applications in Civil Proceedings.

Peter has commenced practice in New Zealand, having emigrated and left the Johannesburg bar in 2019.

Michelle was articled to this firm and has over 31 years' experience in commercial work.

Michelle is a senior consultant in the Commercial Department as well as the Employment Department.

Her areas of experience include commercial due diligence, all aspects of employment related matters, related litigation and referrals to tribunals and councils, all aspects of commercial acquisition and disposals, corporate governance, property transactions, restraint of trade agreements and related litigation and confidentiality agreements as well as Estate Planning (Wills and Trusts).

Tina was articled to Brian Kahn as a candidate attorney in 2021 and now practices as an associate at the firm. Her focus areas are commercial litigation and insolvency.

Tina has represented the firm with Brian Kahn at the Consulegis annual meeting in Palma de Mallorca in 2023 and has also travelled both locally and internationally for some of the firm’s clients.
